During my trip to İstanbul in April this year, I bought a small bottle of perfume from the perfume museum and boutique Parfumane that was dedicated to the Silk Road, named exactly that: İpek Yolu. From what I can gather, it was launched in 2024; I could not find information about the perfumer.
This is not a fragrance I can easily categorize, although the website of Parfumane labels it under “Fresh.” It opens with a foody aroma, which could be led by cardamom, and feels oily in the way of spices being heated in cooking oil—this is not the dry spice of the desert familiar from other perfumes recalling the Middle East. The blend is slightly caramelized as well, like a reduction that’s on the cusp of being burnt. This first stage is meant to evoke the “energy and excitement at the beginning of the Silk Road.” Tinged with some chaos, no doubt.
Soon, the scent turns fruity with a tartness reminiscent of fresh pineapple. This could be an extension of the brightness that cardamom brings, and is the only part I wish were toned down a bit. Bergamot is a listed top note and although I don’t recognize it individually, I’m sure it contributes to the overall yellow, fruity impression. The good stuff is underneath, however, with floral (jasmine and rose), tea-like, and resinous and woody notes unfolding. No specific wood notes are listed, but buhur is a main heart note, and that could be a perfume in its own right as it’s normally made of wood chips soaked in various aromatic materials including unspecified spices. Coffee and lavender notes enhance this aspect, along with a supporting patchouli. The middle phase “symbolizes the colorful and diverse cultures of the Silk Road.”
The base is ambery, and this is where some leather appears, although it does not dominate. The amber is strong on labdanum, enhanced by unnamed synthetics, but avoids becoming too obnoxious in the woody amber register. In the cooler indoor temperatures, the drydown is warm and creamy courtesy of musks and vanilla. Labdanum and styrax last the longest on skin, possibly accompanied by other balsams or resins. In the outdoor summer heat, the tartness and spicy aspects are more apparent, probably carried by the buhur accord and enhanced by residual coffee and lavender.
I don’t have any personal associations with the Silk Road, but I can appreciate the spirit of mysticism and adventure surrounding depictions of the long and arduous journeys by camel. Imagination can only enhance the sensory experience of fragrance, can’t it?
Nose Prose 
This fragrance sounds most intriguing. The bottle adds to its appeal. As with reading, imagination plays a huge part in the enjoyment.

The bottle looks very unusual. 15 ml isn’t a large amount, but do you think that bottle can hold it for a while without affecting the scent or being affected by the content?

The SA said it was better than glass. From what I’ve read, this kind of bottle is breathable and will concentrate attars over time, aging them (supposedly in a good way). This version of the perfume is the concentrated oil. I keep the bottle in its original wooden box and when I slide open the cover, it releases a beautiful floral scent.

Did you happen to watch Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road adventure series Nose Prose. It was amazing and she is hilarious.
We did not do much perfume in Istanbul, just the stalls in the bazaars. Lucky you to find something so gorgeous.

We didn’t spend much time in bazaars as we couldn’t cover everything. There were several perfume chains on the main streets as well, but I prioritized Parfumane.

The camel leather bottle appears to be sold out now, but the glass bottle versions are better priced. Floral is a vast genre! Hope you’re finding new scents to love.

This sounds interesting, Nose Prose. It’s good that they haven’t forgotten the base notes, as most things these days seem to sparkle early and fizzle out. It’s an added bonus that it doesn’t lean too heavily on woody ambery material. Nice bottle.

I think I’d rather have a nice fragrance missing typical base notes than one that defaults to spiky woody ambers, but it’s good to strike a balance.
